Confident Assurance
What does it mean to truly know that we have eternal life? Not to hope for it, wonder about it, or nervously reach for it, but to know it with settled, unshakeable confidence? That is exactly the question at the heart of 1 John 5:13-15, and the answer is more grounding and more liberating than we might expect. The passage makes clear that God Himself has purposed for His people to live with confident assurance of salvation, and He has gone so far as to give us an entire book of the Bible dedicated to that very end. True assurance is not built on feelings or personal experience, but on the sure promises of God as revealed in Scripture, all of which find their center in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. This message draws a sharp and important distinction between false assurance, which many tragically possess, and genuine Christ-centered confidence that transforms how we face every uncertainty life throws at us. When we understand that eternal life is not merely a future hope but a present reality already given to every true believer, it reframes everything from how we process suffering to how we engage a world desperate for the kind of hope we carry. This is not abstract theology. It is the secret to joy-filled living in a lost and dying world. It is the secret to a life that is, as one Puritan put it, heaven on earth.
