The Clarification of Love

What does it truly mean to love God and others? Not in words, not in sentiment, but in the deepest, most transforming sense of the word? In 1 John 4:19-21, we are brought face to face with one of the most clarifying and convicting truths in all of Scripture: we love because He first loved us. This simple statement carries the weight of eternity behind it. Before we ever wanted God, before we ever turned toward Him, before we were even born, God's love was already moving toward us. That is the provocation of true love toward others, and it changes everything about how we understand our own faith. The sermon walks us through three clarifying lenses: the provocation of love, rooted in God's initiating grace; the problem with love, exposing the counterfeit that speaks warmly of God while living in coldness toward others; and the priority of love, which binds our love for God and our love for fellow believers into one inseparable command. Together, these three threads form a portrait of what genuine Christian love actually looks like in a life. If we have been loved first, freely, and fully by God, then the natural and Spirit-driven overflow of that love will be in three directions: inward through the gospel, upward in worship, and outward in selfless, sacrificial, joyful service to one another.
