Biblical Counsel for Stubborn Sexual Sin Passions of the Heart

Sadly, we live in a sexually driven and lust enslaved culture that has impacted and, on many levels, infected the modern Church. Yet, we are not without divine clarity amidst such emotional and sensual confusion as the Bible has a lot to say about fleshly lusts and clearly explains both the root cause of humanity’s idolatrous passions and the ultimate hope and help that are only found in the Gospel. Therefore, BBC will be offering a special class this summer for men on learning how to fight sexual sin biblically. This will be an intense time of study where we will be biblically, theologically, and thus practically, equipped to kill stubborn sins, including those sexually driven lusts, that often haunt many believers.

If you are a man who desires to kill sin, strive for holiness, and help others do the same, then this class is for you! Every man is in a battle everyday fighting for purity in his heart, his head, and his home. That fight is also one that we dare not engage in alone as we contend for purity in the Church, in part, by personally seeking to help one another grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ. This calling is not an option for some, but a clear directive to all who have been saved by God to help others become faithful lifelong followers of Christ!

This will be an 8-week long class that will be offered at BBC and will take place Thursday evenings from 7:30 – 9:00 pm, with the first class starting Thursday, July 11th. We will be using a specific book written by one of my seminary professors, Dr. John Street, called Passions of the Heart: Biblical Counsel for Stubborn Sexual Sins. Here is an Amazon link for the book You will need to purchase the book before the class as this will serve as our text book and a primary material source for the class discussion and homework. This class will involve personal reading, homework, and classroom interaction to be both practically effective and biblically edifying. Growing as a believer, which always involves killing sin (Col 3:5), is never easy and never happens by osmosis but always involves self-denial, self-sacrifice, and self-discipline for God’s glory! If growing by these biblically mandated methods (Lk 9:23-27; Eph 4:17-32; Gal 5:16-25) as a follower of Christ are not your desire, then this class is not for you, and I would highly encourage you to read 2 Cor 13:5 and follow Paul’s exhortation immediately.

In the next few weeks I will be handing out a class schedule that details the material and chapters in the book we will be covering each week so that you can prepare ahead. In order to keep us organized, I am asking everyone who is planning on attending to please email Morgan DeRieux at so that we know how many to prepare for. Morgan will be serving as the point person in the class helping me with all the logistical and practical needs so that we can best serve you men and make the most of our time together. Please feel free to contact Morgan or myself if you have any questions, and I look forward to growing with each of you that sign up as we seek to faithfully fight for the holiness without which no man will see the Lord (Heb 12:14)!

Yours for the Master’s Glory,
Pastor Matt
